Community Benefit Program

Montage Health’s passion for caring for our community extends far beyond the walls of our hospital and clinics. From schools to neighborhoods, we go where Monterey County residents need services, education, and resources to stay healthy. Each year, we invest millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to improve our community’s well-being and support local organizations.

Dollars that make a difference

In 2025, we provided $228.2 million in support and services to Monterey County communities, nonprofits, public agencies, schools, and more. Throughout the year, we supported 243 organizations [PDF] with community benefit services such as grants, volunteering, and free medical care.

How our community benefits

You or someone you know may live a healthier life thanks to our work in the community.

Improving access to care

Montage Health strives to improve the health of all people in Monterey County regardless of their ability to pay. In 2025, we dedicated $218,195,174 (in funds and unreimbursed care expenses) to increase access to care, especially for people in need. Here are just a few examples of how we did it:

Providing health education and wellness resources

In 2025, Montage Health devoted $5,875,899 to educating Monterey County communities about healthy lifestyle choices. Learn about wellness topics like self-care, disease prevention and management, mental health, nutrition, and physical activity through our programs including:

  • Cancer counseling — Guidance and education for patients and families dealing with cancer
  • Classes — Group sessions and lectures on a wide variety of health-related topics
  • Health blog — Stories and practical advice you can use to improve your quality of life
  • Grants — Funding for local groups that promote health awareness and education
  • Wellness screenings — Tests that check certain health measures and can help you detect an illness early, especially if you don’t have a primary care provider

Building healthy communities

Programs and initiatives

In 2025, we provided $3,401,661 to make our community healthier through programs and initiatives like:

  • Donations of unused medical supplies and office equipment to nonprofits
  • Emergency management preparation, coordination, and response
  • Grants to organizations that support Montage Health's mission
  • Medical support for local events like the Big Sur International Marathon Foundation events, First Tee and Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach
  • Support groups that provide free, encouraging, confidential environments
  • Telecare — Daily wellness check-in phone calls from Montage Health Foundation's Auxiliary volunteers for seniors and homebound residents

Special care for special needs

Some of your neighbors in Monterey County face significant barriers to achieving and maintaining good health. That’s why Montage Health invested $731,087 in 2025 to help those at risk because of age, domestic violence, behavioral health issues, HIV, poverty, substance use disorder, or other factors. Discover how we make it easier for everyone to get the care they need. Some of our services positively impacting community members who need extra support include:

    • Bereavement program — One-on-one and group grief support to cope with the death of a loved one
    • Food donations — Gifts of extra prepared foods from Montage Health's Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula to local nonprofits
    • Grants — Support for organizations that help people who have special needs
    • Recovery Center — Program to restore health, relationships, quality of life, and self-respect in adults affected by substance use
    • Substance use navigators — Support for those with substance use in our emergency department
    • Support for Gathering for Women and other local organizations

Help for the unhoused

Medical care is harder to access for people who struggle each day to find a safe place to sleep and enough food to eat. Montage Health brings providers to people who don’t have homes and works to reduce homelessness through:

  • Multidisciplinary outreach team — A collaboration between Montage Health, Monterey Police Department, the district attorney’s office, Monterey County Behavioral Health, Adult Protective Services, YWCA, and others to address social issues in a constructive way. Social workers partner with police officers to provide solutions instead of citations
  • Recurrent emergency department visitor program — Help for people to prevent and manage illnesses so they don’t need to come to the emergency department as often
  • Grant funding for I-HELP — A local nonprofit that brings together more than 60 local faith communities and organizations to provide support to unhoused individuals. Each night, individuals are provided a safe place to sleep in a shared space, a meal, and support and resources to help them move forward
  • Grant funding for Gathering for Women — A local organization that provides homeless women with resources and a caring community
  • Grant funding for Community Homeless Solutions — One of Monterey County’s largest providers of homeless transitional housing and emergency shelter beds, including the Central Coast Respite Center. Montage Health financially supports this facility, which provides unhoused individuals with a bed and space to rest, recuperate, and promote self-care following a stay at a local hospital
