Childhood and adolescence, especially the teen years, are times of exploration, social influences, and the development of independence. Part of that process involves exposure to drugs and alcohol, which is why it is important for parents to communicate with their children early and often about the dangers and risks of substances.

Navigating youth substance misuse

Let’s Talk is a resource for parents and caregivers to help support youth in an open and loving way as they navigate a time that can include exploration and experimentation. It's important for youth to understand the potential consequences of using drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and to have a plan in advance for saying "no" in front of peers. Parents can help by having honest, empathic, and timely conversations with youth about this topic. It's important to answer questions, establish expectations, role-play scenarios, and agree on a safety plan. Let's Talk is a guide created to help parents do just that.

How to navigate tough conversations confidently

Let's Talk will help parents and caregivers learn how to have difficult (but important) conversations about drugs, alcohol, and nicotine with youth. Feel confident and be prepared to answer questions. Parents are encouraged to speak with their youth about this topic regularly. Having these difficult talks early on can also prevent underage substance use and misuse.
