Joint replacement

If nonsurgical treatments don’t ease your arthritis pain, joint replacement could help. This surgery exchanges your worn-out hip, knee, or shoulder with an implant. So, you rediscover the freedom of healthy movement.

You’ll be in experienced hands at Montage Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. We’ve offered complete joint replacement care longer than anyone else on the Monterey Peninsula.

Long-lasting relief from arthritis

Consider knee, hip, or shoulder replacement if you have osteoarthritis. This common condition happens when a joint’s soft cartilage wears away due to age or high-impact activities. With little cushioning, bones rub painfully against each other. Cartilage doesn’t grow back, but surgery may offer relief.

Surgical consultation

During your first visit, we’ll review your symptoms, health history, and goals. You’ll learn about all your treatment options, which might include rehabilitation or regenerative medicine. Ask as many questions as you need to feel fully informed. We want you to be confident choosing a path forward.

Joint repair and replacement

Depending on your injury, your surgeon could recommend one of these procedures.

Hip replacement

Traditionally, surgeons approached hip replacement from the back of the body. But if your surgeon enters from the front (anterior), you’ll recover sooner.

Joint reconstruction

This could involve repairing cartilage or realigning bones to reduce stress on a joint. We use the smallest possible incision to make recovery quicker and easier.

Knee replacement

Most often, surgeons replace the entire knee. But if part of it is still in good shape, your surgeon may recommend replacing only the damaged portion.

Shoulder replacement

You may benefit from the traditional approach or reverse replacement, which swaps the ball and socket to treat a torn rotator cuff.

Computer-assisted surgery

Your surgeon may use a computer to make joint replacement more precise. The technology includes 3D imaging and navigation to guide your new joint to the best position. The computer can also create a detailed plan before surgery, so everything fits just right. During the procedure, real-time tracking helps your surgeon make accurate adjustments. You may have less pain, a quicker recovery, and a joint that lasts longer.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation after joint replacement helps you regain movement and balance. Right after surgery, you’ll start gentle exercises to prevent stiffness and improve blood flow. A physical therapist will guide you through exercises to protect your new joint while building strength.

You may use a walker or cane at first, but as you heal, you’ll move more easily. Follow your rehabilitation plan for the best results. It can take weeks or months to fully recover, but your exercises will help you get back to daily activities safely.
