Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Effective treatment for resistant major depression

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an effective method to treat resistant major depression. Major Depressive Disorder is traditionally treated with therapy and antidepressants, but those approaches are not effective for everyone. Many people see reduction in depressive symptoms with TMS. Performed in an outpatient setting, TMS is a noninvasive treatment with minimal side effects that targets areas of the brain responsible for depression. If antidepressants haven’t worked for you in the past, TMS may be an option.

How TMS works

During a TMS treatment, a cushioned helmet is placed on the patient's head and an electromagnetic system, similar to that used in an MRI, delivers patterned, magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain involved in mood and depression.

Treatment is usually 36 sessions over the course of approximately 6 weeks. Daily sessions are brief, only 10-20 minutes, and most people can continue with their daily routines while receiving treatment.

We offer treatment with the Brainsway TMS system. It has been tested in more than 60 clinical studies and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating depression.

Candidates for TMS treatment

Every patient will be thoroughly screened by a TMS-certified provider. TMS eligibility may vary based on individual insurance coverage — however most insurance providers cover TMS.

TMS may be considered medically necessary as a treatment of major depressive disorder when the following criteria are met:

  1. Current depressive episode and confirmed diagnosis of major depressive disorder by a licensed clinician and on validated, standardized rating scale
  2. Two unsuccessful trials of antidepressant medication, either due to lack of symptom relief or inability to tolerate due to side effects
  3. Absence of clear contraindications such as seizure history, certain metal implants in the head, or uncontrolled use of certain substances
