Two million brain cells die every minute during a stroke. The faster intravenous (IV) thrombolytic therapy (medication that dissolves the clot that's causing the stoke) is given, the better the outcome.

Data is shown for ischemic stroke, which is caused by arteries to the brain being narrowed or blocked, resulting in reduced blood flow. If this continues, even for a few minutes, brain cells start to die.
*As compared to all (nationwide) hospitals in the American Heart/Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) database. GWTG is a program that ensures continuous quality improvement of stroke treatment and ischemic stroke prevention. The program aims to help ensure that eligible patients are initiated on guideline-recommended therapies and receive appropriate counseling prior to hospital discharge.
