High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment available through our robotic surgery program. It uses ultrasound energy to precisely target and destroy cancerous cells. There are no incisions or radiation. You can complete cancer treatment with less disruption to your daily life.

How robotic surgery works

Robotic surgery uses advanced computer‑assisted technology to help surgeons perform procedures with enhanced precision and control. Systems such as the da Vinci® platform translate the surgeon’s hand movements into highly refined motions of small, wristed instruments. While viewing magnified, high‑definition 3D images of the surgical area, the surgeon guides these instruments in real time. This approach can offer greater accuracy, improved dexterity, and access to hard‑to‑reach areas compared with traditional techniques.

In other situations, your care team may recommend high‑intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)—a completely noninvasive technology that treats targeted tissue using concentrated ultrasound energy. Instead of using instruments or incisions, HIFU focuses ultrasound waves on a precise point within the body, generating heat that destroys the intended tissue while sparing surrounding structures.

Both robotic surgery and HIFU are modern, highly targeted treatment options. The choice between them depends on the condition being treated, the location, and the goals of your care team.

Robot-assisted surgery uses small incisions and tiny tools, so it’s less invasive than traditional (open) surgery, which uses one large incision. You’ll benefit from a faster recovery with less risk of pain, bleeding, infection, and scarring.
