Physician Clinical Volunteer grant program

Ask the Montage Health Foundation to sponsor your clinical volunteer work.

Who can apply?

You can request funding if you’re a member of Montage Health’s medical staff in good standing. This includes independent, private practice, Montage Medical Group, or Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula-based physicians.

You may apply up to four times over two years. After the fourth proposal, you must wait one year to reapply.

Eligible projects

Clinical volunteer work with a 501(c)(3) organization or international non-governmental organization is eligible for support. You may apply if your volunteer work takes place at:

  • Community Hospital
  • Local organizations, such as RotaCare or RotaPlast
  • In the United States or abroad with organizations such as Doctors Without Borders
  • Volunteer projects at organizations already receiving support from Montage Health are not eligible.

Award details and requirements

Before you apply, understand the program’s funding details:

  • Ten awards of up to $10,000 each are available annually
  • Award funds may only be used for medical supplies or direct program expenses. Support for travel expenses, such as hotel fees and meal costs, will be considered in certain circumstances
  • You may request payment via check or electronic transfer
  • A completed W-9 form is required to process payment, and you’ll receive a 1099 form for the award amount

Outcome reporting requirements

If you receive funding for your clinical volunteer work, you must:

  • Provide a written outcome report about how the awarded funds were used. If your award funds a multi-year project, a mid-point progress report is required
  • Submit your outcome report to Kevin Causey by email at

Plan to share the results of your work with colleagues during a grand rounds presentation. You’ll also be featured in a news release and photo we’ll share with local media and post on Montage Health’s website and social media. We may ask you to present to the Montage Health Foundation Grants Committee, our board, and donors.

Recent clinical volunteer honoree

Richard Alexander, MD

Dr. Richard Alexander, an obstetrician/gynecologist, was awarded a grant for his volunteer work with Westmont Bethel Hospital in Guatemala.

For nearly two decades, Alexander has volunteered and raised money for Westmont, a nonprofit hospital that cares for underserved residents in the poorest section of their city. This was Alexander’s second Montage Health Foundation volunteer grant.
