This course is designed for paramedics, EMS supervisory, and support personnel, who care for patients who have a 12-lead EKG as part of their diagnostic treatment. Provider approved for seven continuing education contact hours, pre-hospital care providers, EMS Provider No. 27-002.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
This is an introduction to 12-lead EKG concepts. It will include introduction to the use of 12-lead equipment, recognition of patterns of myocardial infarction, and recognition of patterns that may mimic acute M.I. Also covered will be bundle branch block, axis determination, and multi-lead rhythm interpretation.

OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to

1. Describe the features of the normal 12-lead EKG.
2. Demonstrate the proper placement of the EKG electrodes.
3. Utilize equipment appropriately to obtain a 12-lead EKG.
4. Describe the signs and symptoms of myocardial ischemia and injury.
5. Define and be able to recognize the following on the EKG: myocardial ischemia, injury, and necrosis.
6. Identify the leads that correlate with the area of the heart involved in the MI.
7. Compare and contrast the EKG patterns of acute MI with other causes of ST elevation and depression.
8. Recognize right and left bundle branch blocks.
9. Determine the part of the heart affected by acute MI.
10. Recognize some of the miscellaneous conditions that cause EKG changes, such as pre-excitation syndromes, drug effects, hypertrophy, and wide-complex rhythms.
11. Use multi-lead assessment to enhance rhythm interpretation.
