MONTEREY, Calif. — Wearing pink hard hats, community members and leaders of Montage Health broke ground today (Monday, October 14, 2019) on a new breast care center at Ryan Ranch.

Anticipated to open in December 2020, the new center will be double the size of the current center, increasing access for patients and providing space for new technology. It will have four 3D mammography machines, two automated breast ultrasound machines, and two bone-density scanners, among other equipment related to breast and bone health.

“I think of it as Breast Care Center 2.0,” Dr. Susan Roux, the center’s medical director, said at the groundbreaking. “We weren’t broken and we didn’t need fixing — except for space.”

The center will be at 2 Upper Ragsdale Drive in Ryan Ranch, near other services provided by Montage Health. It will connect by an indoor walkway to a building that houses Community Hospital outpatient services including a lab and radiology, and be next to the largest office of Montage Medical Group.

The new building will measure about 21,000 square feet, half of which will be home to the breast care center. Montage Health is assessing the best uses for the other half of the building.

The center will continue to be named for Carol Hatton, a former development officer for Community Hospital who helped spearhead fundraising for breast care until her death from breast cancer in 2009. Her husband, Dr. David Hatton, attended Monday’s groundbreaking.

“Carol was passionate about the mission of the breast care center,” said Dr. Steven Packer, president/CEO of Montage Health. “With this special milestone, we’re going to extend Carol’s legacy and extend the work of the breast care center by building a new, larger, more comprehensive center.”

Like the current center on Cass Street in downtown Monterey, the new center will have a welcoming, warm environment.

“If you’ve been to the current center, you know how warm and caring it is, thanks to the design and, more importantly, to the care and caring provided by our staff,” Packer said. “Our new center will carry on that important ethos.”
