MONTEREY, Calif. — Montage Health announced the renaming of its Comprehensive Cancer Center to the Bodine Comprehensive Cancer Center, honoring the extraordinary generosity and vision of local community member Murray Bodine, whose personal cancer journey and deep gratitude for the care he received inspired a transformational investment in the future of cancer care in Monterey County.
Through the support of his own “village” of friends and loved ones, Bodine helped raise $14 million through Montage Health Foundation to strengthen cancer patient navigation and support services, ensuring that patients and families have access to compassionate, coordinated care close to home.
The new name marks the beginning of a long-term effort to transform cancer care for the region, an effort inspired by Bodine’s deeply personal experience. After receiving his diagnosis, Bodine found himself surrounded by what he calls his village of clinicians, caregivers, friends, and the people who loved him most, all of whom stood by him throughout his cancer treatment. That experience reshaped his understanding of what compassionate, coordinated cancer care can mean for a patient and their family.
Determined to ensure that every person in Monterey County receives that same level of support, and that they would not have to travel far for treatment, Bodine, along with his remarkable group of friends and family that surrounded him, became the driving force behind a growing philanthropic movement. Through their shared commitment, generosity, and belief in what cancer care can become, Murray and his community raised $14 million to accelerate progress in early detection, advanced treatment, and comprehensive wraparound services.
“Murray’s story is one of generosity, courage, and the extraordinary power of a community united by purpose,” says Michele Melicia Young, Director of Montage Health Foundation. “The Bodine Comprehensive Cancer Center is named in his honor, but it also signals the beginning of something larger: a renewed commitment to building the future of cancer care right here at home.”
The Bodine Comprehensive Cancer Center will serve as the foundation for expanded clinical capabilities, enhanced technology, and strengthened supportive services. Early initiatives include the launch of a dedicated valet service at Community Hospital’s main entrance this summer to improve patient access, reduce stress, and enhance support and experience. We are also recruiting a clinical‑trials nurse navigator and expanding screening tools and imaging capacity. Significant technology investments are also underway, including the addition of a second linear accelerator, which will double the number of patients who can receive radiation treatment by the end of the year. The radiation oncology program is also upgrading to new planning and information systems that will make treatments more precise, more consistent, and more personalized for patients. Additional initiatives include improvements to online risk‑assessment tools and investments in mobile cancer screening to reach more patients across the region.
At Montage Health, we believe in moving together through cancer — recognizing that care is more than treatment alone. Patients and families need guidance, emotional support, and a coordinated team walking with them from screening through survivorship, ensuring no one faces the journey on their own.
The Bodine Comprehensive Cancer Center stands as a tribute to Murray Bodine’s legacy and a promise to Monterey County, serving as a springboard for continued growth and innovation in cancer care.
