MONTEREY, Calif — May 26, 2026 — In a coordinated effort to support residents displaced by the March 9, 2026, 800 Casanova Avenue apartment fire, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, the Community Foundation for Monterey County, and Montage Health have partnered to provide $110,000 for supportive services for the fire survivors. The funding will support rapid rehousing and individualized case‑management services delivered through Community Homeless Solutions (CHSolutions).
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to ensuring displaced residents receive the support they need to regain stability after the fire. The grants — $50,000 from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, $35,000 from the Community Foundation for Monterey County ($25,000 from the Monterey County Fire Relief Fund and $10,000 from an anonymous donor), and $25,000 from Montage Health — close a critical funding gap and enable a coordinated recovery effort with the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey and the City of Monterey. 89 people were displaced by the fire.
“This partnership is a powerful example of civic and nonprofit organizations coming together quickly in a moment of crisis,” says Nat Rojanasathira, assistant city manager for the City of Monterey. “Our community stepped up to support displaced residents, and this funding ensures that survivors receive the housing and recovery services they need to move forward. We are grateful to all three nonprofit organizations for their rapid response and commitment to the people of Monterey.”
Support focused on victims’ immediate and long-term needs
The funding will help launch CHSolution’s Monterey Rehousing & Supportive Services Program, designed specifically for survivors of the Casanova apartment fire. The program will provide:
- Individualized case management
- Housing navigation and identification
- Needs assessments
- Rent subsidies and move‑in assistance
- Follow‑up support to help residents retain housing
Montage Health’s immediate medical response
In the days following the fire, Montage Health mobilized quickly after learning that many displaced residents were elderly, disabled, or managing significant health needs; many were already Montage Medical Group (MMG) patients.
MMG staff quickly assessed urgent needs for medications, medical equipment, wound care supplies, and transportation, while coordinating with primary care providers, specialists, care‑management teams, dialysis centers, and equipment vendors to ensure continuity of care. The team delivered essential supplies — including CPAP equipment, wound care materials, glucometers, blood pressure monitors, and assistive devices — and remained onsite throughout the weekend to help patients navigate transportation challenges, mobility limitations, communication barriers, and access to urgent or scheduled medical services. These efforts helped stabilize a vulnerable group of residents during a chaotic and stressful displacement.
CHSolutions staff will begin coordinating services immediately, supported by the Housing Authority, which will maintain a focus on activities associated with the Casanova apartment building. Together with the City of Monterey and the three partnering organizations, CHSolutions will continue working to ensure displaced residents receive the housing, health, and recovery support they need in the weeks and
months ahead. Community members who wish to learn more about ongoing recovery efforts or explore ways to support local disaster‑response initiatives can contact Community Homeless Solutions or visit their website for additional information.
