MCAT preparation scholarship

Preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is one of the most important — and expensive — steps on the path to medical school. Through generous donor support through Montage Health Foundation, the MCAT preparation scholarship helps remove financial barriers by providing funding for MCAT preparation courses, study materials, and examination fees for Monterey County students pursuing a career in medicine.

Eligible students may request funding for one or more of the following:

  • One MCAT preparation course
    • The Princeton Review
    • Kaplan on demand
    • Kaplan in person
  • Approved MCAT study books
  • Up to two MCAT registration fees

Funds are paid directly to approved vendors whenever possible.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be pursuing admission to an accredited U.S. medical school
  • Be a Monterey County resident for at least one year
  • Be a current or former participant of Montage Health Foundation’s Mentoring in Medicine program
  • Be preparing to take the MCAT
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a career in medicine
  • Complete the online application
  • Submit all required application materials

  • Personal statement
  • Proof of undergraduate enrollment or acceptance
  • Planned MCAT date (if requesting exam funding)
  • Selected MCAT preparation course
  • Budget request
  • Documentation of financial need
  • Letter of recommendation

Maximum scholarship award

The maximum lifetime scholarship award is $5,000 per student, regardless of the combination of awards received. Awards are available only while annual funding is available.

Rolling application process

Applications are reviewed throughout the year. Awards are made until the annual scholarship allocation is fully committed. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible, especially when planning to register for an upcoming MCAT exam.

Scholarship priorities

The scholarship is intended to strengthen the local healthcare workforce by supporting students who demonstrate both financial need and a strong commitment to becoming a doctor. Priority consideration is given to applicants who:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Show a strong commitment to pursuing a medical career
  • Submit a thoughtful personal statement
  • Have participated in a healthcare pipeline or workforce development program

Year one priority

In the 2026–2027 scholarship cycle, funding is reserved for students who participated in Montage Health Foundation’s Mentoring in Medicine program. This honors the donor's vision of strengthening an established healthcare workforce pipeline. Future years may expand eligibility based on available funding and program evaluation.

Can I apply before registering for the MCAT? 

Yes, but you may not apply for the MCAT testing fee until you have enrolled in the exam and can show proof of enrollment. 

Can I receive funding for a second MCAT attempt? 

Yes, if it does not exceed your maximum $5,000 lifetime scholarship award. 

When are awards announced? 

On a rolling basis while funding is available. 

Are funds paid directly to me? 

MCAT fees are reimbursable, and all other fees are paid to the vendor. 

What counts as proof of financial need? 

Most recent federal tax return or proof of participation in a need-based assistance program.
