Watch on YouTube
February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the second-leading cause of death in Monterey County and the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. American Heart Month highlights the importance of heart health and knowing your health metrics like blood pressure, cholesterol, and body fat.
“When you reach the age of retirement, 70 percent of men and women have cardiovascular disease,” says Dr. Ahmad Edris, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiologist at Montage Medical Group. “It is important for people to realize that it is very prevalent.”
Edris says that cardiovascular disease is often preventable. “People can modify their risk significantly by exercising, losing weight, proper diet, and seeing a physician and identifying certain risk factors they may have.”
You can prevent heart disease by:
- Telling your doctor if you have a family history of heart disease
- Getting regular checkups and screenings
- Eating a healthy diet
- Exercising
- Limiting alcohol and not smoking
