10 ways to prepare for an emergency

1. Create an emergency kit, today (see list below). If you already have an emergency kit prepared, check it regularly.
2. Check your car. Make sure your car’s tires have good tread, that you windshield wipers work well (and have enough fluid), and that your car’s fuel is full before any anticipated big storm. Your headlights should always be on in the rain.
3. Check your house. Clear your outdoor drains and gutters of any leaves, dirt, or debris. Have weakened or dead trees inspected by an arborist.
4. Clear a defensible space around your home in case of a nearby fire.
5. Consider purchasing flood and fire insurance. Keep in mind, most policies have a 30-day waiting period.
6. Don’t risk your life. During significant storm events, avoid waterways, flood control channels, and the ocean, which can all rapidly swell and become extremely dangerous. NO PLACE outside is safe when lightning is in the area.
7. Have Emergency Alerts sent to your mobile phone. Visit: www.AlertMontereyCounty.org to join Monterey County’s system to receive emergency notifications.
8. In the event highway 1 or 68 is closed, download and print the Community Hospital disaster route maps and keep copies in your vehicles.
9. Know what to take and where to evacuate in case you need to depart your home quickly. Practice this plan with your family.
10. Be informed about the types of risks in your area and how to best prepare. Visit Monterey’s Office of Emergency Services to potential risks and plan accordingly.
