Lighting the way for mental health awareness
Mental health isn’t just the absence of mental illness, but a state of well-being where one can realize their potential and deal with challenges in healthy ways.
Montage Health’s comprehensive and compassionate mental health services, including inpatient and outpatient services, substance use programs, and Ohana, empower the community to reach a healthier future.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is illuminated green every night in May.

Be kind to your mind
One in five U.S. adults has a mental health disorder, and only about half of them receive mental health treatment. Take proactive steps to care for your mental health with these six tips.
1. Stay connected with others who support and care about you
Positive relationships with friends and family can provide emotional support, a sense of belonging, and a source of joy and fun. Activities like a class or support group can help you meet new people and build new connections.
2. Take care of your physical health
Eat well, exercise regularly, get enough quality sleep, drink plenty of water, and avoid drugs and alcohol. Physical health affects mental health, and vice versa.
3. Manage stress with healthy coping strategies
Try stress management techniques like breathing exercises, mindfulness, meditation, hobbies, time in nature, self-care, or talking to someone you trust. Stress is a normal part of life, but too much stress can affect mood and well-being.
4. Practice gratitude
Every day, be mindful and appreciative of the things for which you are grateful. Consider making a gratitude list every night before bed. Express appreciation to others and challenge negative thoughts. Gratitude and positivity can boost your mood, self-esteem, and resilience.
5. Set manageable goals
Set goals and work toward them in small, realistic steps. Whether it's exercising more or not smoking, baby steps can help you get there. Don't let setbacks keep you from reaching your goals.
6. Seek help when you need it
Getting help is a sign of strength. Montage Health’s mental health programs are personalized to each patient and can help you build resilience, confidence, and strength in your journey toward better mental health.
