Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of recognizing breast cancer signs and symptoms for early detection.

“Mammograms have been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer by about 60 percent,” says Dr. Susan Roux, Medical Director at Carol Hatton Breast Care Center. “The mammogram as a method of finding a small problem that’s easily treated is critical.”

Roux, who has practiced medicine for nearly 40 years, says it is important to know that some types of breast cancers aren’t detected through pain or discomfort. “You feel fine, even when there’s something there,” Roux says. “You don’t have a sense that there’s a cancer there.”

Women should get a mammogram every year, Roux says, starting at age 40. “Turns out to be the most lifesaving test you can do,” Roux says. “So do it.”

Specialists at Carol Hatton Breast Care Center provide breast cancer care, genetic risk assessment, mammograms, 3D breast ultrasound, breast MRI, breast biopsy, and more.
