November is National Diabetes Month, serving as an opportunity to raise awareness around the growing diabetes epidemic. About 45 percent of Monterey County residents have either diabetes or prediabetes. With education and lifestyle changes like eating right and exercising, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed, and some of its more serious complications can be avoided.

“The most important thing is making sure you have your blood sugar checked at least once per year,” says Dr. Kearnan Welch, an endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism specialist with Montage Health.

Eating a healthy diet and incorporating movement into your daily routine are critical to diabetes prevention.

“Exercise at least 30 minutes per day on average,” Welch says. “Most of the time you can completely change the onset of diabetes, or even put it into remission, with just diet and lifestyle adjustments.”
