Gastric bypass and other bariatric surgeries can provide long-term weight loss and improve quality of life for qualified candidates.

According to Dr. Mark Vierra, General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, Montage Health, bariatric surgery allows patients to eat less and make healthier food choices.

It looks as though it changes their food preferences in ways which may be healthier.

Vierra says that weight-loss after bariatric surgery is only sustainable if patients make lifestyle changes around diet and exercise.

“The operation does not produce weight loss without motivation and without significant changes in the way people choose to order their lives after they’ve had one of these operations,” Vierra says. "I think there's a belief that the surgery somehow magically produces weight loss and it just doesn't work that way. The motivation has to be there."

Bariatric surgery at Montage Health can be done robotically, resulting in faster recoveries, less pain, and less scaring.
