According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Montage Medical Group cardiologist Dr. Jayme Lynn Rock-Willoughby shares some heart healthy tips that everyone can fit into their daily routines.

I think the most recent study I saw was that one person every 34 seconds is dying, yet eighty percent is preventable.

In order to reduce the risk of heart disease, Dr. Rock-Willoughby says it’s important to know your numbers and make sure you’re getting seven to nine hours of sleep every night. It’s also important to work in a daily exercise routine, and adhere to a heart healthy diet.

Heart smart tips:

  • Know your numbers – Learn about family history and talk to your doctors
  • Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Eat healthy – Make healthy food choices, and incorporate more fruits and vegetables
  • Incorporate exercise – Aim to stay at a healthy weight
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Quit smoking
