Recruiting primary and specialty doctors to increase access

You shouldn’t have to leave our community to get the care you need. But with a nationwide shortage of doctors, including here in Monterey County, and our community’s increasing healthcare needs, getting care when and where you need it can be challenging.

That’s why continually recruiting highly skilled doctors and advanced practice providers (APPs) is a priority at Montage Health. The goal is to expand access to care by increasing capacity, reducing wait times, and making more specialty services available locally.

In 2025, Montage Medical Group recruited 17 new doctors and APPs, from primary care to specialties like neurology, cardiology, and urology. Momentum has continued into 2026, with 10 new doctors and APPs already contracted and additional recruitment underway, particularly for primary care and high‑demand specialties.

“One of our top priorities is identifying gaps in care,” says Mark Carvalho, MD, chief executive officer of Montage Medical Group, Montage Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center, and MoGo Urgent Care. “Whether it’s services our area is lacking or not having enough doctors, our goal is to fill those gaps by recruiting the best medical minds. It’s not just about what’s possible, but what’s genuinely purposeful and needed for the people who live here.”

But recruiting in Monterey County isn’t without challenges. High costs of living and housing can be barriers, especially for early‑career doctors managing significant student loan debt. Despite those realities, Montage Health’s roster of doctors and APPs continues to grow, strengthening access to high‑quality, local care for the people who live here.

Here are some of the newest doctors and APPs joining Montage Health in 2026.

Samrat “Sam” Sanghvi, MD, radiation oncology

Dr. Sanghvi has extensive experience treating a wide range of cancers, including prostate, breast, lung, and brain tumors. He uses advanced, highly targeted radiation techniques to treat cancer while minimizing impact on healthy tissue.

Gregory Chen, MD, urology (starts in October)

Dr. Chen has decades of experience in minimally invasive procedures, kidney stone disease, prostate conditions, and urinary tract disorders. His arrival will expand access to specialized urology care and advanced surgical options, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside Monterey County.

Folusho Ogunfiditimi, PA-C, urology

A seasoned urology physician assistant, Folusho brings clinical expertise and a strong focus on improving access to care. He supports continuity for patients managing chronic urologic conditions and coordinated care alongside urology doctors, helping patients get timely answers and treatment plans.

Charmaine Peters, MD, infectious disease

Dr. Peters specializes in diagnosing and treating complex infections, including those that are difficult to identify or require specialized management. Her expertise helps ensure patients can receive advanced infectious disease care locally, whether for serious infections, complications after hospitalization, or antibiotic‑resistant conditions.

Louis Zhang, MD, vascular surgery

Dr. Zhang treats conditions affecting the blood vessels, such as peripheral artery disease, aneurysms, and varicose veins. By emphasizing patient education and long‑term care planning, he helps patients understand their conditions and avoid complications.

Jeremy Silk, MD, hyperbaric medicine, plastic and reconstructive surgery, wound care

Dr. Silk is a board‑certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with extensive experience in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. He treats both complex reconstructive needs and chronic, non‑healing wounds, helping patients recover faster and preserve function after injury, illness, or surgery.

Kinza Sultan, DO, internal medicine/geriatrics

Dr. Sultan provides comprehensive adult primary care with additional training in geriatrics. She focuses on managing chronic conditions, preventive care, and supporting healthy aging, helping older adults maintain independence and quality of life.

Jerrold DeShong, MD, internal medicine (starts in August)

Dr. DeShong provides primary care for adults, including preventive services and chronic disease management. His addition will help to increase primary care capacity, making it easier for patients to establish and maintain ongoing care locally.

Dana Sheely, MD, endocrinology (starts in August)

Dr. Sheely has deep expertise in diabetes management, thyroid disease, and pituitary disorders. Her arrival will expand access to specialty hormone care, allowing patients with complex endocrine conditions to receive ongoing treatment without leaving the area.

Increasing access to local, high-quality care

Each new doctor and APP represents greater access, shorter waits, and more care delivered closer to home. As Montage Health continues to grow its team, the focus remains the same: providing our community with the best possible care, locally.
