Tick talk: Don’t let ticks bug you this summer

Man and woman hiking and a tick sign

Breathtaking views at Jacks Peak. Sea-cliff trails at Point Lobos. Towering redwoods at Garrapata. Monterey County’s countless parks and trails gift outdoor explorers with palatial vistas and natural beauty unlike anywhere else.

But among that beauty hide ticks — bloodsucking bugs that can suck the fun out of any summer outing. Don’t let ticks stop you from enjoying the outdoors with these tips from Lauren Karasek, Nurse Practitioner, MoGo Urgent Care

Avoiding ticks

  • Wear pants and long sleeves in light colors when you’re in the garden, hiking, or camping

  • Stay on well-maintained trails and avoid areas with thick brush and high grass

  • Consider tucking your socks into your pant legs to prevent ticks from crawling under your pants. Tuck in your shirt

  • Treat your clothes and gear with .5 percent permethrin spray. You will likely need multiple treatments per year since repeat washing removes the protective spray

  • Wear an EPA-approved insect repellant (e.g., DEET, lemon eucalyptus, picaridin) when you are in an area where ticks may be present

  • Change your clothes and do a thorough tick check as soon as you are finished with your activities. Ask a family member or friend or use a full-length mirror to check areas that are difficult to see (e.g., back, hair, behind your ears). Also check your pets and gear

  • Take a shower within 2 hours of getting home to remove ticks that may be present but not yet attached to your body

Treating tick bites

If you do experience a tick bite, MoGo Urgent Care is here for you. Visit our locations in Carmel, Marina, and Monterey if:

  • You are uncomfortable removing the tick on your own. It is important to remove ticks promptly, so don’t delay

  • A tick was attached for at least 24 hours and removed less than 72 hours prior to seeking care. You may meet criteria to be treated with a preventive Lyme disease medication

  • You develop symptoms of a tick-borne illness within a few weeks to a month of a tick bite: rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, body fatigue, flu-like symptoms
